Biography

Stuart has been Liner LLP’s Managing Partner since its formation in 1996.  Since that time, the firm has expanded into one of the city’s most prominent boutique law firms.  In 2016, the Los Angeles Business Journal named Stuart one of the “Top Facilitators” in the “500 Most Influential People in Los Angeles” based on his reputation as a lawyer and “fixer of problems” for celebrities, business managers, lawyers, agents, and studio heads in the entertainment industry, in state and local politics, and a number of real estate owners and developers. He is known for his ability to act as a consigliere for his clients in litigation, in particular when complicated issues, transactions, and crises are involved, often finding successful solutions while remaining behind the scenes.

Stuart is often brought in to settle difficult cases, and has achieved several eight-figure settlements in contingent fee cases, including a case against a major insurance company for targeting a product towards low-income residents in several different states; a class action against a large drug wholesaler brought by participants in a profit sharing and savings plan that bought the company's stock; and a high-profile case against the State of California based on a failed $2.3 billion buildings sale.

Stuart and the firm have also successfully launched a number of business ventures with clients in the areas of entertainment and media, real estate, and other core investments that have evolved the firm from a traditional hourly practice into a partner that shares risk and thereby more closely aligns the firm with its clients’ interests.  In 2007, the firm provided legal services and invested in the expansion of Summit Entertainment, which was transitioning from being a film distribution company into a film studio.  Ultimately, another client of the firm acquired Summit Entertainment in 2012 for $412.5 million. In another transaction, the firm invested with client Colony Capital in the acquisition out of bankruptcy of LodgeNet (now known as Sonifi)—the premier provider of interactive media and consulting services in the hospitality and healthcare industries.  In addition, Stuart and the firm have developed and sold hundreds  of millions of dollars worth of luxury residential, student housing and commercial real estate projects, and the firm recently partnered with a client in the acquisition of a portfolio of parking companies that has annual revenues of $600 million.

Beyond leading the firm and guiding clients, Stuart actively participates in civic leadership and public interest organizations, particularly in the area of education. In addition to serving on the board of the South Central Scholars Program, an organization that helps thousands of motivated and gifted kids from South Central Los Angeles achieve their college goals, he also created the firm’s foundation that serves as a platform to provide funding, mentoring, and employment for 40 bright students every year, helping them achieve their dream of attending college. Additionally, he guided his three sons in forming a charitable organization that has assisted various orphanages in Laos, including raising all funds necessary to build a dormitory for 200 orphans.
